How to Create a Concrete Planter with Crackle Effect
Step 1: Measure the Concrete
Measure your concrete mix (cementall, concrete pigment, water). I use a 4:1 ratio—four parts concrete to one part water. Adjust as needed based on the consistency you prefer.
Step 2: Mix and Pour the First Layer
Mix the concrete thoroughly until smooth. Pour in your first layer using your desired color pigment. Tilt the mold in all directions where you want the crackle effect to appear. Once you're satisfied with the coverage, place the casting frame back into the mold.
Step 3: Create the Crackle Effect
After 30 to 45 minutes, once the first layer has dried completely, remove the casting frame. Then, gently stretch or press the sides of the silicone mold. This cracks the thin concrete layer, creating the signature crackle effect. Carefully remove any excess concrete flakes.
Step 4: Pour the Second Concrete Layer
Prepare a fresh batch of concrete. Pour the second layer over the cracked surface. Repeat the same tilting process if desired, and allow it to dry completely.
Step 5: (Optional) Add a Third Layer
For added depth or contrast, you can repeat the process once more with a third layer. Just be sure each layer is fully dry before adding the next. Cover it to prevent cracking at the bottom.
Step 6: Demold
Once the final layer is fully dried and set, gently remove the planter from the silicone mold. You now have a beautifully textured planter with a unique crackle effect!
Tips:
- Tap the mold after pouring, or use a vibrator to remove air bubbles.
- Cover the bottom with plastic or a board to retain moisture while drying and prevent cracks at the base.
- If you're using it as a planter, it's recommended to do a 24-hour water bath to increase strength and help prevent future cracking.
